Prevention of MRSA on Tattoos

MRSA Definition: By Mayo Clinic Staff

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection is caused by a strain of staph bacteria that's become resistant to the antibiotics commonly used to treat ordinary staph infections. Most MRSA infections occur in people who've been in hospitals or other health care settings, such as nursing homes and dialysis centers. When it occurs in these settings, it's known as health care-associated MRSA (HA-MRSA). HA-MRSA infections typically are associated with invasive procedures or devices, such as surgeries, intravenous tubing or artificial joints.Another type of MRSA infection has occurred in the wider community — among healthy people. This form, community-associated MRSA (CA-MRSA), often begins as a painful skin boil. It's spread by skin-to-skin contact. At-risk populations include groups such as high school wrestlers, child care workers and people who live in crowded conditions.

With the climate in South Africa it is dry healing that is correct regime for the healing of tattoos.

Some old-school artists have even advised against using any ointments or lotions at all, as they "are vehicles for bacteria, which can cause infections and scabbing."

First and foremost, your tattoo needs to be clean, and it needs to breathe. If the pores are clogged, its going to cause infection.

On a more serious note you or your artist could be a carrier of the superbug MRSA. To eliminate all possibilities of infection you should make sure your enviroment where you are to be tattooed is sterile and safe. The skin surface should be cleaned with alcohol or 3% food grade hydrogen peroxide at least 15 seconds before tattooing commences.

If you are going to use a tattoo aftercare product then here are a few guidlines:

Try to choose:

No Touch Application Products.

Designed for Easy, One-handed Use.

Preferably a Durable, Non-aerosol Spray that Fits Anywhere and is Crush Resistant.

Perfect for your Purse, Pocket, Backpack, Travel bag, Kitchen, and Desk.

Yoothh4U Tattoo Care Mist Spray.

A first aid antiseptic solution such as Yoothh4u Tattoo Care, which is free of dyes, fragrances and stabilizers, is by far the best application as there is no contact with the tattoo except the disinfecting mist containing 3% food grade hydrogen peroxide, that is sprayed onto the tattoo and left to dry. Free from oils or a petroleum base it will not clog pores while disinfecting the area.

CDC meeting minutes June 2012 Atlanta, GANew developements in chemical fogging have occured since the publication ofthe 2008 CDC/HICPAC guideline including vaporised hydrogen peroxide, ozone, and chlorine dioxide that primarily are used for bioterrorism decontamination of buildings.None of the HICPAC voting members expressed opposition to the CDC disseminating its proposed clarification statement for disinfectant fogging.Pages 31 & 32http://www.cdc.gov/maso/FACM/pdfs/HICPAC/2012061415_HICPAC_MINUTES.pdf

If you decide to use creams, oils, ointments and lotions, make sure that the surface of the hands or fingers used are 100% sterile too. Bacteria can be cross contaminated to the product you are using so do not go back to the product with the same finger unless sanitized again.

Petroleum based products tend to drain the color from a tattoo and also have no healing agents.

Neosprin.

After a few years of Neosporin being the #1 product recommended for tattoo aftercare, it soon became apparent that it was falling short of its expectations. Several people were coming up with allergic reactions to the ointment, and were getting tiny red bumps on their tattoos. After these red bumps disappeared, they took the ink along with them and the customer was left with a "spotted" tattoo.

Bacitracin.

Bacitracin in a low melting special base containing White Petrolatum and Mineral Oil. One of the main symptoms of a Bacitracin reaction is a "weeping" tattoo - one that leaks a small amount of fluid from the wound even several days into healing.

A&D.

A&D is not anti-bacterial, but it does contain two crucial ingredients, obviously - Vitamins A and D. These vitamins are very good at healing abrasions and minor wounds because they keep the skin supple and protected from outside organisms. The downfall with this product is that because it does not include any actual healing agents, it is not going to help you if you are prone to infection.

Bepanthen.

Bepanthen does not contain perfumes, antiseptics or preservatives and is clinically proven to protect from the causes of nappy rash. Bepanthen is an ointment containing pro-vitamin B5. Pro-Vitamin B5 gently aids natural skin recovery, while keeping it soft smooth and moisturised. The choice is yours but you should follow the advice of your tattoo artist.

Q. Can I sue a tattoo shop if they gave me MRSA?

A. We are schooled in blood borne pathogens, we have to be, to be licensed. The waiver at our studio states that you hold no one but yourself responsible for any type of complications resulting from the tattoo or piercing, and that you have no physical or mental reasons why a tattoo or piercing could be harmful in any way, and that you are not under the influence of any alcohol or otherwise mood altering substances at the time the tattoo is administered, and that you are not pregnant or breast feeding. You also agree to leave the premises at the first request of any representative of ______ Tattoos and Body Piercing, and agree not to return.

You need to be able to prove that the tattoo shop gave MRSA to you. Your best bet is to be talking to an attorney right now. Any decent lawyer will get the waiver thrown out. Its very rare that a waiver that has a person sign away rights is upheld when challenged.

What are the Risks?

Potentially, anyone who gets a tattoo or piercing is at risk for contracting an infection – and yes, that includes MRSA.

Dozens of people in Ohio, Kentucky and Vermont recently got MRSA skin infections from tattoos.
